COmpany E, 28th marines

Picture
This photo is truly an amazing find and one that I know a lot of Marine enthusiasts will be excited to study.  For it was the men of Company E who raised the second "famous" flag atop Mt. Suribachi that Joe Rosenthal's camera captured.  This photo is from a 1985 tri-fold 40th Anniversary reunion program.  This photo was the entire inside spread of the program.  As seen above, I have pieced together the complete photo as it appeared in the program.  Below I have broken the photo into three sections.  Please click on each of the three photos to see them enlarged.  In 1985 the Marines were trying to identify each man in this company photograph.  But as you can see there are a lot of missing names.  If anyone positively knows the names of any of these men, please contact me and I will add their names to the list.  Of the flag raisers, Harlon Block and Rene Gagnon are already identified.  I have tried to find Franklin Sousley, Ira Hayes and Michael Strank in this photo but have not yet identified them.  I have identified Harold H. Schultz, the other flag raiser, as man #23 in this photo, meaning the 23rd man from the left in the front row.
